The $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle debuted in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s ambitious campaign to beautify American coinage, which he felt had become artistically stagnant. Roosevelt personally commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the gold coins, seeking to create pieces that would rival the artistic achievement of ancient Greek coinage. Today, 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The 1927 release of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles was the last in the program’s history to feature production at three different branch mints in a single year. Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco all struck Double Eagles in 1927, but in the years to follow, Philadelphia would dominate production. In 1928, 1929, 1932, and 1933, only Philadelphia issued the coins. San Francisco was the only mint to strike the coins in 1930, and 1931 saw production at both Philadelphia and Denver, though Denver issued just 106,500 coins out of a total production of more than 3 million coins.
