The $20 Double Eagle denomination was introduced by the United States Mint in 1850. The largest denomination of the US Eagle Series, this coin featured only two different design combinations during its history. The final imagery used in the series debuted in 1907 and was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, with the coins becoming known as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Today, 1925 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The level of detail Saint-Gaudens achieved in his design is extraordinary, particularly in Liberty’s flowing Grecian gown, which appears to ripple with each step she takes. He designed the figure in extremely high relief, which initially caused significant production difficulties at the mint – the coins required multiple strikes to bring up the full detail, and the high points of the design wore down quickly on the dies. This led to a modification of the relief for regular production.
All 1925 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in this listing are available in Mint State 64 condition.
