The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle represents the second and final design featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from the United States Mint. First issued in 1907, this design remained in production until 1933, though minting was briefly disrupted during and after World War I. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ development of the Liberty design on the 1907 $20 Double Eagle was a meticulous process that began with President Theodore Roosevelt’s commission in 1905. Saint-Gaudens, already in declining health, worked tirelessly to create what would become his final masterpiece, producing dozens of sketches and clay models to perfect the high-relief design. He collaborated closely with Roosevelt, who shared his vision of creating American coinage as beautiful as ancient Greek coins.
All 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins available here are in Mint State 66 condition. Coins with this grade have an above-average luster with no more than three of four minor contact marks. A few hairlines may be visible under magnification, with only a few small flaws in the primary focal fields.
On the obverse of the 1924 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is the celebrated image of Lady Liberty. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Liberty was a bold artistic statement for its time, showing her striding forward in full relief, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
The reverse of the 1924 $20 Gold Double Eagle presents an image of the American bald eagle gliding across the sky with the rising sun below. Type II designs in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Series include Arabic numerals and 48 stars on the obverse, along with the national motto “In God We Trust” on the reverse.
