The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was the second and final design used by the United States Mint on the $20 Gold Double Eagle. Introduced in 1907, the design was produced through 1933 with some disruption in production during and after World War I. Right now, 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin is available here in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with an MS63 grade exhibit a slightly impaired mint luster with distracting marks possible in the prime focal areas of the design field. These marks may consist of numerous small contact marks or a few scattered, heavier marks. Hairlines may be present as well, with scattered hairlines or a singular, small patch.
The 1924 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was one of the final four issue dates, along with 1925, 1926, and 1927, to feature coins struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The 1924 issue saw its lowest production at San Francisco, with just 2.927 million coins released. While 1924 is considered a common date in the series, surviving specimens with Mint State certifications are estimated to number less than 3.5% of the total original mintage.
The obverse of 1924 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles comes with an iconic portrait of Lady Liberty. Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty design was groundbreaking in its day, depicting Liberty in front-facing relief as she strides toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
On the reverse side of the 1924 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin, you will find the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is shown in left-profile relief as it glides through the air of the sun as it rises along the bottom of the coin. Type II coins in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Series feature Arabic numerals and 48 stars on the obverse, as well as the national motto of In God We Trust on the reverse.
