In December 1921, the United States Mint introduced the Peace Silver Dollar, a coin destined to become the last 90% silver dollar issued for everyday transactions. Created to honor the triumph of World War I and the American wish for enduring peace, this remarkable series remains a favorite among collectors. Today, 1923 Peace Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Anthony de Francisci created the images used on the Peace Dollar, both obverse and reverse. The reverse of the Peace Dollar depicts an eagle perched on a rock, gazing toward a rising sun, with an olive branch clutched in its talons and the word “PEACE” inscribed below—explicitly commemorating the end of “the war to end all wars.” This was the first time an American coin directly celebrated peace rather than merely symbolizing liberty or national pride.
All 1923 Peace Silver Dollar Coins available here come with plastic slabs and a Mint State 65 certification. Coins in this condition have an attractive mint luster with a few small, scattered contact marks. One or two larger marks are possible, as well as one or two small patches of hairlines.
The obverse of the 1923 Peace Dollar Coin features a striking depiction of Lady Liberty. Shown in left-profile relief, Liberty’s hair cascades behind her as she wears a radiant crown of light. The design is a tribute to the peace achieved following the devastation of World War I.
On the reverse, the 1923 Peace Silver Dollar displays a majestic American bald eagle resting on a rock. With its wings tucked calmly at its sides and eyes fixed on the horizon, the eagle is set against the backdrop of a rising sun, symbolizing hope and a bright future.
