The 1923 Legal Tender Note was one of the final redesigns for the large-sized format of the note. This particular design combination on the $1 Legal Tender Note was only available for a handful of years as the series was modified in 1928 to downsize the notes to the modern small-sized format. Right now, 1923 $1 Legal Tender Notes are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Note Highlights:
Each 1923 $1 Legal Tender Note in this listing comes in Very Fine condition. Now nearly 100 years old, these impressive notes show moderate signs of circulation handling with numerous fold lines and light-to-mild soiling. The notes arrive individually packaged inside of plastic sleeves. Please note that when you buy more than one, the exact wear patterns on the notes could vary from one item to the next.
The 1923 $1 US Note was one of the last tandem issues of the $1 denomination in both the United States Note and Silver Certificate programs. The Series of 1923 notes are also among the last produced by the United States in the larger format, with all circulating notes printed after 1928 featuring the modern small-sized format.
President George Washington features on the obverse side of the 1923 $1 Legal Tender Notes. Though the Series of 1923 is far from the first US paper currency to feature the image of the first President of the United States of America, it is the first to feature his likeness as we are accustomed to seeing it on the modern $1 Federal Reserve Note. President Washington had previously featured on US Notes and Silver Certificates in a left-sided three-quarter relief. He is now set on a right-sided three-quarter relief instead. 1923 $1 Legal Tender Notes have red ink on the serial numbers and the scalloped US Treasury seal.
The design found on the reverse of the 1923 $1 Legal Tender Note is known as the cogwheel for the background element at the center of the note. Other features on this side of the note are simple and include the nation of issue and face value.
