In 1921, the US Mint issued silver dollars for the first time since 1904, and the program resumed with the initial use of the historic Morgan Dollar design. The 1921-S Morgan Dollar had a large mintage of 21.695 million coins, but weak, mushy strikes characterized the San Francisco Mint coins from this release. This particular 1921-S Morgan Silver Dollar is a notable exception as one of just 1,462 coins to reach the MS65 grade level. Right now, the 1921-S Morgan Silver Dollar in MS65 condition is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
This 1921-S Morgan Silver Dollar is in Mint State 65 condition. Typical coins in this grade have an attractive, high-quality luster with light, scattered contact marks. There are no major detractions in the primary focal areas, and the coins may have a few scattered marks. This 1921 coin is a stellar piece from the silver dollar’s transitional era, with the 1921 release finishing the year with the new Peace Dollar design replacing the Morgan Dollar.
The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar has a unique backstory unlike any other American coin. Designed in 1878 by Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, this silver dollar design was issued annually until 1904. Silver dollar production ceased that year and would not resume until 1921, following the passage of the 1918 Pittman Act. Interestingly, George Morgan was then serving as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1921 and created new dies with his classic 1878 design to enable the restart of Morgan Dollar production.
The obverse of 1921-S Morgan Dollar Coin has a depiction of Lady Liberty. This design showcases Liberty’s head in left-profile relief, with a Phrygian cap on her head, as well as a coronet crown and a laurel wreath.
On the reverse of the 1921-S Morgan Silver Dollar, you will find the image of the heraldic eagle. Also designed by Morgan, the image shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread to the sides. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
