The first Peace Silver Dollars struck by the United States Mint remain an important hallmark in 20th-century US silver coinage. The 1921 Peace Dollar was struck in high relief, a facet of the series that only lasted into early 1922. This 1921 Peace Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint is a stunning MS65 specimen with robust definition in its central elements and its peripheral fields. Today, the 1921 Peace Silver Dollar in MS65 condition is available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
On December 27, 1921, the United States Mint released the first Peace Silver Dollars in American history. Designed to replace the Morgan Silver Dollar and sustain silver dollar production for the years to come, the original Morgan Silver Dollars issued in 1921 and early 1922 were high-relief specimens. The difficulty the mint faced in consistently striking the high-relief visuals resulted in subsequent coins from mid-1921 onward to feature a standard circulation strike.
This 1921 Peace Silver Dollar is in Mint State 65 condition with light, scattered marks and no major detractions in the primary focal fields. This particular coin has soft, frosted luster that accentuates the high-relief visuals. The obverse has warm, golden-bronze toning and olive-mauve highlights, while the reverse has a slight blue-gray and tan toning around the periphery.
On the obverse of the 1921 Peace Dollar Coin, a left-profile image of Lady Liberty is displayed. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, Liberty is shown with her hair flowing and wearing a prominent crown of light. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed on this side, using a unique Latin style in which the letter U is replaced by a V in trust.
The reverse of the 1921 Peace Silver Dollar depicts the American bald eagle perched on a ledge. With its wings resting by its sides, the eagle gazes toward the distant horizon where the sun is rising.
