In 1921, the United States Mint issued the Morgan Dollar for the final time. The popular silver dollar design was first issued from 1878 to 1904. After a 17-year hiatus in silver dollar coining, the United States resumed striking silver dollars in 1921 with the Morgan Dollar design back in circulation. 2021 marks the centennial of that final release. Right now, 1921-2021 Morgan Dollar Black Ruthenium Tribute Rounds with a gold-plated layer are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
Each of the 1921-2021 Morgan Dollar Black Ruthenium Tribute Rounds in this product listing comes with an individual capsule. The rounds are also offered with a small stand to enable the upright display of the round, which helps better showcase both sides of the round on display. Each one comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity.
To increase the visual brilliance of these Morgan Dollar Tribute Rounds, the mint has applied to visually contrasting clad layers. The entire round is clad in a layer of black ruthenium to provide dark contrast against the design elements. Those design elements are clad in a layer of 24-karat gold that provides a visual pop when viewing the round.
On the obverse of the 1921-2021 Morgan Dollar Tribute Round, you will find the original effigy of Lady Liberty created by George T. Morgan. The design shows a left-profile portrait of Liberty wearing a wreath crown with a coronet in her hair. A Phrygian cap holds up much of her hair at the back of her head, with a few stray curls of hair running down her neck. The field includes a commemorative dual date marking the centennial of the final release and comes with 13 stars, a nod to the original states that formed the United States of America.
The reverse side of 1921-2021 Morgan Dollar Black Ruthenium Tribute Rounds features the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also based on the original design from Morgan, this version of the heraldic eagle comes with only the American bald eagle in front-facing relief. There is no US national shield in Morgan’s version of the heraldic eagle. The bird does, however, still clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
