From 1795 to 1933, the United States Mint issued gold coins into circulation for Americans to use as payment for everyday items. These coins had some of the most beautiful designs to grace American circulation coinage, but many of the gold coins of the US Eagle denomination were lost in the 1930s when the government abandoned the gold standard and melted down most of the stockpile of coins in circulation. As a result of age, low original mintages, and the meltdowns of the 1930s, some of these coins are quite rare today. Right now, 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coin in this listing comes with a plastic flip to house the coin. Specimens in XF+, or Extremely Fine, condition have only light signs of wear and tear found on the highest points of relief for the coin. Some traces of the original mint luster may also be present. The 1916-S release of the $10 Indian Gold Eagle is considered the 10th rarest coin in the Indian Eagle design series.
The US Mint introduced the Indian Gold Eagle design in 1907 as a replacement for the long-running Liberty Coronet on the $10 gold piece. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it was the final design for the coins prior to the end of the gold coin in 1933. The 1916-S issue was the only release of $10 Indian Gold Eagles that year and roughly 2% of the original mintage is estimated to survive today.
Liberty features on the obverse side of 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Coins. This design from Saint-Gaudens features a left-profile portrait of Liberty as she wears a feathered headdress. The design element includes an arch of 13 stars over Liberty’s head with the 1916 date mark at the bottom of the field.
An American bald eagle is found on the reverse field of the 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle. This design features the bird in left-profile relief perched on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch. The S mint mark is located on the left side of the design field near the tip of the sheaf where the olive branch leaves extend beyond the arrows, just to the left of the T in TEND DOLLARS.
