The $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle was the final design series from the US Mint’s Pre-33 $5 Gold Half Eagle. In 1916, the San Francisco Mint was the only branch mint to issue $5 Half Eagle Coins for circulation in the United States. The final mintage was 240,000 coins, higher than the previous year and the final issue of these coins until the last release in 1929. Now, 1916-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins in Mint State condition are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In the obverse of 1916-S $5 Gold Half Eagle Coin, you’ll find a left-profile effigy of an indigenous figure. This design is famously one of the first indigenous-focused designs on American coinage and shows a chieftain with a feathered headdress. The design includes six stars to the left of the field and seven stars to the right.
For the reverse of 1916-S Indian Gold Half Eagles, the design captures a stoic American bald eagle. The eagle is shown here perched on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch. The eagle rests with its wings at its sides. Both designs, obverse and reverse, are incuse struck on the coins, meaning the visuals are sunk into the coin’s surface.
Bela Lyon Pratt’s innovative incused design featured a Native American chief in profile, breaking from traditional raised relief by pressing the image into the coin’s surface. This controversial 1908 design was criticized for its unusual technique and cultural representation, yet it remains one of the most distinctive American coin designs ever produced.
These 1916-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are in Mint State 61 condition. Coins in this condition showcase a few heavy contact marks, as well as a noticeable patch of hairlines. Many 1916 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles are quite lustrous, with gold coloration that can range from greenish gold to orange-gold.
