In 1916, the United States Mint introduced a $1 commemorative gold coin in honor of former President William McKinley. The request to mint the coins came from the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Association to honor the president 15 years after he was assassinated in New York. The McKinley National Memorial in Canton, Ohio stands as a grand tribute to the assassinated president, featuring a domed mausoleum rising 96 feet above a hillside. Completed in 1907 at a cost of $600,000 (approximately $17 million today), the memorial was funded entirely by public donations from over one million Americans.
