The release of the 1913 $10 Indian Gold Eagle comes from the early era of Native American-themed currency in the United States. In the first decade of the 20th century, coins and banknotes issued in the United States began to feature effigies of indigenous Native Americans. The $10 Indian Gold Eagle, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, was the largest coin in this series of Native American-themed currencies.
Obverse visuals on these 1913 Indian Gold Eagle Coins feature a left-profile bust of Liberty as an indigenous figure. Though Saint-Gaudens used a common appearance for the bust of Liberty, his inclusion of a feathered headdress cast Liberty as an indigenous princess. There is an arc of 13 stars over her head.
Reverse design elements on the 1913-S $10 Indian Eagle Coin include the image of an American bald eagle. This design shows the eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows wrapped in an olive branch. The nation of issue, face value, and national motto all feature on this side of the coin.
The 1913-S Indian Gold Eagle Coin is a genuine rarity among circulation US gold coins. At this point in history, only the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint struck the coins. While the Philadelphia Mint issued 442,000 Indian Gold Eagles in 1913, San Francisco issued only 66,000 coins, with this coin being one of the remaining coins from that mintage.
