The Indian Gold Half Eagle debuted in 1908 as the fifth and final design in the series. Right now, 1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins offered here comes in Extremely Fine condition. Coins in this condition exhibit some traces of the original mint luster with light wear present on the higher relief points of the coin. Indian Half Eagles were the first-ever incuse coins from the US Mint with designs that were struck down into the surface of the coin rather than engraved onto its surface in 3D relief.
In 1912, the US Mint issued just over 1.1 million of the $5 Indian Half Eagles. The coins were only struck by the Philadelphia and San Francisco branches of the US Mint, with 790,000 coins issued in Philadelphia and 392,000 in San Francisco. The Indian Half Eagle Series was initially struck on an annual basis, with new strikes each year from 1908 to 1916. After the US joined World War I, production halted and would see only one final strike in 1929, though the coins remained in circulation until 1933.
The obverse of the 1912 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle comes with a bust of an indigenous figure. This was the first American coin to feature an indigenous figure in the nation’s history and it shows the individual in left-profile relief with a feathered headdress.
On the reverse of 1912 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Coins, you will find the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is set in left-profile relief with its wings folded at its side. The eagle is perched on a sheaf of arrows that is entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing both war and peace.
