Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the design featured on the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in 1907. He was commissioned personally by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. As the nation’s profile on the international stage began to rise in the early 20th century, President Roosevelt sought to overhaul American coinage to better reflect the nation’s newfound prominence.
Obverse design elements on 1911-D $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles include a full-length effigy of Lady Liberty. This design shows Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The field includes the U.S. Capitol Building, a ring of stars, and rays of sun light.
Reverse visuals on 1911-D Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins include the image of an American bald eagle in flight. The eagle is shown gliding through the air with its wings raised as the sun rises from the bottom of the design field.
