Designed in 1908 by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Half Eagle is one of the most remarkable coins in American history. The introduction of the Indian Half Eagle marked the debut of not only the nation’s first-ever incuse-struck circulation coin, but also one of the first uses of indigenous imagery on American currency. Now, 1910 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
For the obverse of the 1910 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle, Pratt created a portrait of an indigenous tribal figure. Set in left-profile relief, this portrait shows a figure wearing a feathered headdress with 13 stars flanking the portrait. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above, while the date mark is included below.
In the reverse design of 1910 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Coins, Pratt offers a glimpse of the American bald eagle. This design is similar to Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction from the $10 Indian Eagle and shows the eagle in left-profile relief with its talons clutching a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch wrapped around the sheaf.
The Indian Half Eagle had a unique minting history at the US Mint. It was struck from 1908 to 1916, but new coins were issued only one time after World War I, in 1929. Four branch mints issued the coins during the program’s history, with New Orleans issuing the coins just once in 1909, Denver five times, San Francisco nine times, and Philadelphia striking the coins every year but 1916. The 1910 release included strikes by Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver.
These 1910 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins arrive in plastic flips and are in Extremely Fine, or XF, condition. Coins in this condition typically show only light wear on the higher relief points of the field and may have some traces of mint luster.
