Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the $10 Indian Gold Eagle and is often overlooked in comparison to his beloved design for the $20 Gold Double Eagle of the same era. Saint-Gaudens’ artistry and craftsmanship shine through in this 1909-S $10 Indian Gold Eagle, with its pleasing satin luster and warm, golden hue. The coin’s beautiful design elements are accented on both sides by a soft amber color around the peripheries. Today, 1909-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coins in AU58 condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Saint-Gaudens’ design for the $10 Eagle is a uniquely American image and was adjusted in the early stages of production at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt. During the same era of coin redesign, Bela Lyon Pratt created an incuse depiction of an indigenous figure with a ceremonial headdress, while Saint-Gaudens’ design originated as a portrait of Lady Liberty with the addition of a ceremonial headdress, or war bonnet, blending classic American coin designs with indigenous culture.
This 1909-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coin is available in AU58 condition. The surface area shows only light signs of friction on its high points, with most of the original mint luster well-preserved. The coin boasts a satin-like luster with warm golden hues and soft amber accents around the edges of the field. The NGC notes that only 313 coins from the 1909-S Indian Eagle Series have earned this grade.
On the obverse of 1909-S $10 Indian Eagle Coins, you’ll find Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Liberty with a ceremonial feathered headdress. The basis of Saint-Gaudens’ design actually came from models he had prepared for the US Mint in its quest to redesign the US Cent. President Roosevelt commissioned Saint-Gaudens to work on a design for the $10 Eagle and even requested that he alter Liberty’s appearance to include the ceremonial headdress, as he deemed the visual concept to be “distinctly American.”
The reverse of 1909-S Pre-33 Indian Gold Eagle features the image of an American bald eagle perched atop a sheaf of arrows. The design includes an olive branch around the sheaf of arrows. This is a Type II specimen, indicating the inclusion of the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST, a feature that was not present on the coins in 1907.
