Designed in 1907 by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Gold Half Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint as the final design for the $5 Half Eagle Coin. This design stands out in American history as the first-ever incuse struck design on an American coin. Right now, 1909 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins in AU condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1909 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin offered here comes in About Uncirculated 58 condition. Coins with this grade exhibit medium or even near-full mint luster with either extremely light wear to only a trace of friction on the highest relief points of the coin. These coins were the first-ever incuse struck specimens from the US Mint, meaning the designs are stamped into the surface of the coin.
The 1909 Indian Gold Half Eagle was struck in relatively low figures with the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, and San Francisco Mint all striking the coins. The San Francisco Mint issued the highest volume at 292,350 coins. Meanwhile, Denver had the lowest figure at 121,540 coins. The Philadelphia Mint issued 184,789 coins.
Obverse design elements on Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles include the left-profile effigy of an indigenous figure. The design is one of the first in the history of American currency to showcase an indigenous figure. Here, this figure is set in left-profile relief with a full, feathered headdress.
Reverse visuals on the 1909 $5 Indian Half Eagle Coin include the American bald eagle. The bald eagle is shown here in left-profile relief as it rests on a sheaf of arrows with its wings at its sides. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch.
