Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ $10 Indian Eagle design is often overlooked compared to its iconic visual for the $20 Double Eagle. Introduced in 1907, this image was the final design for the $10 Eagle. The 1909 Indian Eagle is one of the rarer releases in the $10 Indian Eagle Series, with only 184,089 coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Further, coins graded MS63 or better account for only 712 specimens in total, with just 512 graded MS63. Today, 1909 Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coins are available from JM Bullion in MS63 condition.
Coin Highlights:
Saint-Gaudens’ design for the $10 Eagle is unique among the final designs across the Eagle denomination. While Bela Lyon Pratt’s design for the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle reflected an indigenous figure, Saint-Gaudens’ design blended traditional images of Liberty with indigenous elements. His portrait of Liberty with a feathered headdress is unique among American coin designs.
This 1909 Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coin is in MS63 condition. The typical coin of this grade has an attractive eye appeal with distracting marks or flaws in the primary focal fields. There may also be a few scattered hairlines or a single, small patch of hairlines. This particular coin boasts a satin-like, lustrous finish with a sharp strike. You’ll also notice that 1909 Indian Eagles often feature a hint of green-yellow to rich yellow coloration in the gold.
On the obverse of 1909 $10 Indian Eagle Coins, you’ll find Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty portrait. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty wearing a feathered headdress. The only other coin in American history to showcase Liberty with indigenous elements was the $1 Gold Coin in its Type II and Type III variants.
The reverse side of the 1909 Pre-33 Indian Gold Eagle features the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is shown with its wings at its sides as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch.
