In the early 2010s, a remarkable discovery of Pre-33 US Gold Coins sitting in overseas vaults came to light, leading to their return to the US in what became known as the famed Fairmont Collection. Included among the denominations were Indian Gold Half Eagles introduced in the early 20th century. Today, 1909 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins in certified condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Half Eagle was the first-ever incuse design from the United States Mint and the final design for the $5 Half Eagle denomination. Introduced in 1908, it was struck just 10 times between 1908 and the end of gold coining in the United States in 1933. The 1909 release was the only one in the Indian Half Eagle’s history to feature strikes from four mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, and San Francisco. Denver struck the largest volume at more than 3.4 million coins.
All 1909 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins available here come in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade have slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks and a few scattered heavy marks. Small hairlines may be visible without magnification and several detracting scuffs may be present.
On the obverse of 1909 Indian Half Eagle Coins, you will find the left-profile effigy of an indigenous figure. This design from Pratt was the first effigy of an indigenous figure on American coins and shows a tribal figure in left-profile relief with a full headdress.
The reverse side of 1909 $5 Gold Half Eagles comes with a depiction of the American bald eagle. Also designed by Pratt, this image shows the eagle in left-profile relief as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch.
