This 1908-S Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin is available in MS63 condition. The coin includes strong, radiating sun rays behind Liberty on the obverse, with a reverse that showcases crisply struck details and vibrant sunrays behind the eagle. On both sides, the legends are clear and well-framed.
In 1908, America was rebuilding confidence in its financial system while the San Francisco Mint itself was operating in temporary quarters, having been damaged in the devastating 1906 earthquake. The 1908 issue also marked an important design modification, as the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was added to the reverse following public and congressional outcry over its initial omission by President Theodore Roosevelt, who had considered religious inscriptions on money sacrilegious. The relatively lower mintage from San Francisco compared to Philadelphia makes these coins particularly sought after by collectors today.
On the obverse of the 1908-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin is a full-length image of Lady Liberty rendered in detailed relief. Shown facing forward, Liberty stands amid radiant sun rays and a surrounding ring of stars, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol Building is also incorporated into the obverse design.
The reverse of the 1908-S Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features a bald eagle in flight across the field. Created by Saint-Gaudens as well, the design presents the eagle in left-profile relief as it soars above the rising sun. As a Type II reverse specimen, this coin is among the first to feature the IN GOD WE TRUST motto between the sun and the sunrays on this side.
