The $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle marked the beginning of the final design series for the US Mint’s Pre-1933 $5 Gold Half Eagle coins. In 1908, the San Francisco Mint was among the branch mints to strike $5 Half Eagle coins for circulation in the United States. The total mintage for the 1908-S release reached 82,000 coins, making it the first San Francisco issue of the series. Right now, 1908-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins in About Uncirculated condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1908-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin offered here is in AU55 condition. Coins at this grade level exhibit medium or near-full mint luster with extremely light or only trace signs of friction on the highest relief points. According to the NGC, just 151 specimens exist from this date with an AU55 certification.
Bela Lyon Pratt designed the obverse and reverse of the Indian Half Eagle. Complementing his Indian head design, Pratt’s reverse featured a standing eagle with folded wings, also rendered in incused relief. The eagle clutches arrows and a branch of olive, symbolizing America’s readiness for both war and peace, while the incused technique created striking shadows that emphasized the bird’s noble bearing.
The obverse of the 1908-S Indian Half Eagle Coin features a left-profile image of an indigenous figure. This design was among the first in US coinage to highlight an indigenous chieftain, shown here wearing a feathered headdress. The design includes six stars to the left side of the field and seven stars to the right, encircling the portrait.
On the reverse of the 1908-S $5 Gold Half Eagle, the design presents a stately American bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows wrapped in an olive branch. The eagle’s wings rest at its sides, and like the obverse, the design is incuse-struck, meaning the images are sunken into the coin’s surface rather than raised above it.
