The introduction of IN GOD WE TRUST showed the ability of the American public to influence coinage in the early 20th century, with the missing motto on the 1907 coins proving unpopular. This 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is an MS64 specimen, one of only 854 coins from the 1908 mintage to earn this grade. In 1908, the US Mint introduced its Type III variation of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle after just one full year of production. The Type I coin used Roman numerals for the date and lacked the national motto. The Type II variation introduced in late 1907 swapped Roman numerals for Arabic numerals on the obverse. This Type III variation in 1908 finally introduced the national motto.
This 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin is in Mint State 64 condition. The typical MS64 coin has light scattered marks with a few scattered hairlines. The eye appeal is quite attractive for an MS64 coin. This particular coin was struck with reinforced dies by the mint, resulting in sharper details and a frosted luster. You may also notice a subtle sheen with greenish-gold and orange hues in the gold.
On the obverse of 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gauden Double Eagle Coin, you will find the image of Lady Liberty. Her full-length figure is shown in front-facing relief with a torch held aloft in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The previous Roman numerals have been replaced as of Type II with Arabic numerals, as evidenced by 1908 appearing on this side.
The reverse of the 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features the American bald eagle in flight. The eagle is shown in left-profile relief as it glides through the sky above the rising sun. As a Type III coin, you’ll notice the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun and below its sun rays.
