In the 1990s, a trove of 10,000 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles hit the market that had been sitting in a Wells Fargo Bank in Nevada. Known as the Wells Fargo Hoard, these coins were originally set aside in 1917 for use in paying down World War I debts. All of these 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 67 condition. Coins in this condition have original mint luster with three to four minimal contact marks and one mark that is more noticeable. One or two small hairlines are also possible. These coins come with a special Wells Fargo label in the slab.
On the obverse of 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This front-facing relief shows Liberty with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She walks toward you with the U.S. Capitol visible at her feet, sun rays on the horizon, and a ring of stars around the field.
The reverse side of the 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin features an American bald eagle in flight. This eagle is shown in left-profile relief soaring over the rising sun near the bottom of the design field.
