In 1892, the United States Mint issued a new design series for its mainstream silver coins: the dime, quarter, and half dollar. Known as the Barber Coinage, these three denominations shared a common obverse design and similar reverse designs on the quarter and half dollar. All these designs came from Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Now, 1908-O 90% Silver Barber Quarters are available to you for purchase in certified condition online at JM Bullion.

Charles E. Barber was more than just the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, he was a third-generation die engraver. His grandfather was an engraver in England before moving the family to the United States. Prior to his time as the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Charles’ father William Barber filled the role as 5th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
Barber’s designs for the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar introduced in 1892 would be used on these three denominations until 1916. Each was eventually replaced by now-famous designs like Walking Liberty and Winged Liberty. His bust of Liberty was featured on all three denominations, while the quarter and half dollar featured a shared reverse that was different than that of the dime.
Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse side of 1908-O Silver Barber Quarters. This design was created in 1892 and features a right-profile relief of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath crown.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse field of the 1908-O 90% Silver Barber Quarter. The eagle is shown in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The US national shield is on its chest with a cluster of 13 stars overhead.
