The 1908 release of Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagles featured coins struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. The 1908 issue was unique in the series in that it marked the start of the inclusion of the national motto on the coins. IN GOD WE TRUST was not engraved on 1907 issues of the coin and was not present in early strikes in 1908. The Denver Mint issued a total of 1,046,500 coins in 1908. However, only 210,000 of those coins were released without the national motto. With the heavy circulation of $10 Indian Gold Eagles and the large-scale melting of Pre-33 Gold Coins starting in 1933, the 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle is a rare holdover from this era.
The obverse of 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagle Coins features a left-profile portrait of Liberty. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this image of Liberty features a female bust wearing a feathered headdress. There are 13 stars in an arch over her head and a date mark of 1908 below.
On the reverse side of 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Gold Eagles is the image of the American bald eagle. The national bird is depicted on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch wrapped around the sheaf. The bird is shown at rest with its wings at its sides. This field of the coin has a small D mint mark from the Denver Mint along the edge of the design field near the leaves of the olive branch.
