Augustus Saint-Gaudens revolutionized American coinage with his magnificent $20 Double Eagle design, commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907. Saint-Gaudens’ artistic vision transformed what had been utilitarian currency into sculptural masterpieces, though his high-relief design proved impractical for mass production and was later modified for commercial minting. Today, 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins with No Motto are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagles were introduced in 1907 and revolutionized the design of American currency. The 1908 issue was unique in that it featured two different production runs. At the beginning of the year, millions of 1908 Double Eagles were produced without the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. After public backlash, the motto was added to the coins for the remainder of the year, separating 1908 issues into 1908 No Motto specimens and 1908 With Motto specimens.
All 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here are No Motto specimens with an MS64 certification. Coins in this condition have an average or even slightly above-average strike. The coins may showcase some obvious marks or hairlines, but any other marks or imperfections will be minuscule.
On the obverse of 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, you’ll find that iconic image of Lady Liberty. This front-facing effigy of Liberty shows her full-length figure walking toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol Building is featured at her feet with rays of sunshine and a ring of stars around the field.
The reverse of 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins comes with an image of the American bald eagle. The eagle is shown in left-profile relief with its wings raised as it glides through the air above the rising sun.
