The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was the final design series for the $20 Gold Double Eagle, and its depiction of Lady Liberty is widely regarded as the finest American coin design. Introduced in 1907, the series originally featured coins that did not include the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST. These so-called No Motto Double Eagles are popular with collectors. Now, 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In the obverse design of 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coins, you’ll find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This monumental design shows Liberty’s front-facing figure in full-length relief. She walks toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design includes sun rays behind Liberty, the U.S. Capitol Building, and a ring of stars.
For the reverse of 1908 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins, the mint features the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is shown in left-profile relief as it glides over the rays of the rising sun. The nation of issue and the face value of the coin are shown on this side.
These 1908 $20 Double Eagles are Type I specimens in the series. The Type I coins had a ring of 46 stars around Liberty on the obverse, representing the existing states in the Union at the time the coin was introduced. The Type I reverse lacks the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST between the sun and its rays at the bottom of the reverse field. The Type I reverse was changed in mid-1908 to include the motto, while the Type I obverse wasn’t changed until 1912 to reflect the addition of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union.
These 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 68 condition. Coins in this condition showcase beautiful, sharp strikes with full, original mint luster. There are no more than four light, scattered contact marks or flaws. Additionally, there are no hairlines or scuff marks on the surface areas.
