The Liberty Double Eagle was the first of two designs for the nation’s largest gold coin denomination. Introduced in 1850, the Liberty Double Eagle was produced through 1907, at which point it was replaced by the second and final design, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. This coin features vibrant mint luster with toning that includes soft amber, honey-gold hues at the center that transition to a pale orange or rose color at the peripheries of the design field. The satin-like texture of the background field creates a clear separation between the design elements and the field of the coin.
The 1907-S Liberty Double Eagle was the final issue in the Liberty Series, with these San Francisco strikes accompanied by releases from the Philadelphia Mint and the Denver Mint. This specimen was released during an era of artistic reform in the appearance of American coins, with these final Liberty Double Eagles showing refined engraving techniques and enhanced presentation compared to 19th-century coins.
In the obverse of the 1907-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle, you will find James B. Longacre’s effigy of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1849, it shows Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars around the top portion of the design field.
For the reverse of 1907-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, the design element includes the Great Seal of the United States. This ornate design captures the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. This Type III reverse design element was introduced in 1877. It incorporates the Type II reverse design’s addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, while changing the face value engraving from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
