The final issue date for the $20 Liberty Double Eagle came in 1907, some four decades after it was first introduced. The 1907-D $20 Liberty Double Eagle is a Denver Mint specimen and featured the lowest mintage among the three branch mints that issued these coins in 1907. This specimen has a warm, golden glow with satin-like obverse fields and crisp stars, as well as cartwheel luster on the reverse. Today, the 1907-D Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in MS64 condition is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The final issue of the Liberty Double Eagle came in 1907, just as the US Mint was shifting gears to the new Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The 1907 Liberty Double Eagle release included coins struck by the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, and San Francisco Mint. The San Francisco Mint issued the largest volume of coins at 2.165 million, followed by Philadelphia with 1.451 million, and Denver with just over 842,000 coins.
This 1907-D Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is in Mint State 64 condition. This classic Liberty Double Eagle has strong strike details on both sides, with a rich yellow-gold toning throughout and slight hues of orange around protected areas of the surface. While more than 842,000 coins were struck by the Denver Mint, the NGC notes only 381 coins at this grade from that original mintage.
The obverse of the 1907-D Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin showcases a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty. This portrait, resembling Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty used on smaller denominations such as the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle, was designed for the Double Eagle by James B. Longacre and is distinguished by a coronet crown.
On the reverse of the 1907-D $20 Liberty Double Eagle, the Great Seal of the United States is featured. This design depicts a bald eagle with the national shield, clutching the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other. Classified as a Type III reverse, the coin features both the added national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST (1866) and the denomination engraving of TWENTY DOLLARS (1877).
