The 1906 release of Liberty Half Eagles remains one of the most notable in the history of this series, particularly for those coins struck by the Denver Mint. In the penultimate year of the Liberty Half Eagle design, the Denver Mint struck the coins for the first time ever. Though few of these coins were issued, there are some available through collections like the Fairmont Collection. Now, certified 1906-D Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available to you for purchase online at JM Bullion.

In 1906, the United States Mint was in the process of considering submissions for new designs on its major circulation coinage. This included the four denominations of the US Eagle. In 1906, the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle would be struck for the penultimate time, with only one further issue to come in 1907.
What sets these 1906-D Liberty Gold Half Eagles apart is the D mint mark from the Denver Mint. 1906 was the first year of production at the new branch mint and these coins were among the first ever struck in its presses. The mintage of 320,000 coins at Denver was the lowest of the three mints, alongside Philadelphia and San Francisco, and was almost 50% below San Francisco’s mintage volume that year.
The obverse of these 1906-D $5 Liberty Half Eagles includes a depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief was created back in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht and shows Liberty with a coronet crown. On the reverse of the 1906-D Liberty Gold Half Eagle, you will find the heraldic eagle design from the Type II era in this series. Type II coins include the national motto above the eagle.
Beyond the uniqueness of this coin as a Denver Mint issue, it also has the distinction of being a Fairmont Collection coin. Thousands of US Eagles, primarily $10 Eagles and $5 Half Eagles, made their way to Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a part of international commerce. Thousands of those sat in European banks for decades. The Fairmont Collection represents coins discovered in the 2010s and repatriated to the United States.
These 1906-D Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are Mint State 62 coins. An MS62 coin has impaired or dull mint luster with the potential for clusters of small contact marks, a few larger marks, and hairlines that are noticeable.
