Coin Highlights:
In 1904, the United States marked the centennial of the two-year expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to chart the new territories of the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis was, at the time, the private secretary to President Thomas Jefferson and was a captain in the United States Army.
Lewis selected as his companion to lead the expedition a man by the name of William Clark. A former lieutenant in the United States Army, Clark was the younger brother of George Rogers Clark, a hero of the American Revolution. On May 14, 1804, Lewis and Clark set forth on their journey from St. Louis accompanied by a group of roughly 30 men known as the Corps of Discovery.
Meriweather Lewis is featured in the obverse design of the 1905 $1 Gold Coin. This left-profile bust shows the US Army captain who was a co-leader of the expedition. William Clark is depicted in a similar left-profile relief on the reverse side of the coin. The Louisiana Purchase was completed in 1803 and more than doubled the size of the new American nation, with President Jefferson authorizing the two-year expedition to gain greater knowledge about these newly acquired lands.
These 1905 $1 Lewis and Clark Gold Coins are available to you in AU55 condition. AU55 is a specific grade within the Almost Uncirculated, or About Uncirculated, range of coin conditions. Coins in this condition have only extremely light or trace signs of friction on the highest points of the coin. Additionally, the coins may have medium to near-full luster.
