Introduced in 1850, the $20 Double Eagle from the United States Mint saw just two different design series during its 84 years in circulation. The largest gold denomination ever issued by the United States, the Double Eagle featured the Liberty Head design for 58 of its 84 years in circulation. Today, 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The 1904 $20 Gold Double Eagle achieved the highest mintage in the long history of the Liberty Head design series. In 1904, the Philadelphia Mint and the San Francisco Mint issued the coins, with 6.256 million coins issued by Philadelphia and a further 5.134 million coins by the San Francisco Mint. This was not only the highest combined mintage of any year, but also the two highest totals from any branch mint to ever issue the $20 Liberty Double Eagle.
All 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here are packaged in slabs and arrive in MS62 condition. Coins with this grade have an impaired or dull mint luster with clusters of small contact marks, a few larger marks in the primary focal points, and hairlines that will be noticeable. Please note we cannot guarantee whether the PCGS or NGC graded the specific coin you receive, nor can we guarantee all label designs are the same. All coins are chosen at random after your payment clears and all specimens are MS62 coins.
On the obverse of 1904 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you’ll find a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1850 by James B. Longacre, this portrait shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown. There are 13 stars in an arch over her head and a date mark below.
The reverse of 1904 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins comes with the Type III reverse design. An American bald eagle is at the center with the arrows of war, the olive branch of peace, and the US national shield. As Type III specimens, the coins include the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST within the ring of stars above the eagle and a face value engraved TWENTY DOLLARS. Previous design iterations lacked the national motto (Type I) and had an engraving of Twenty D (Type I and Type II) instead.
