The United States Mint introduced the Double Eagle denomination in 1849 as the Treasury saw a large influx of gold from the California Gold Rush. The coin was the final denomination introduced in the Eagle Series, a set of gold currency the US Mint first released in 1795. The $20 Double Eagle was available in circulation from 1850 to 1933, with the Liberty Double Eagle the longest-running image. Today, 1903-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Prior to 1849, the US Mint issued the Eagles as the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle. While these coins were widely used in everyday economic transactions in the United States, the Double Eagle eventually filled a different role. It was heavily used in bank-to-bank transactions and international commerce throughout its production run from 1850 to 1933.
All 1903-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here come in MS64+ condition. MS64+ coins are among the highest-graded MS64 coins with above-average luster, small contact marks in groups, and the potential for one or two heavier marks and one or two small patches of hairlines.
On the obverse of 1903-S $20 Liberty Double Eagles, you’ll find a portrait of Lady Liberty. Created by James B. Longacre, the design was inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s $10 Eagle design. The left-profile relief shows Liberty with a coronet crown surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.
The reverse side of the 1903-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin comes with the Type III reverse design. Introduced on the coins in 1877, this design shows the Great Seal of the United States with a ring of 13 stars overhead. The Type III reverse features both the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the face value noted as TWENTY DOLLARS.
