The United States Mint launched the Morgan Silver Dollar Series in 1878. Featuring George T. Morgan’s fresh depictions of Liberty and the bald eagle, this series marked the reintroduction of silver dollar coining after a five-year interruption. The Morgan Dollar was issued each year from 1878 to 1904, with a final appearance in 1921 when production briefly resumed after World War I. Today, 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in certified condition at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
George T. Morgan’s expertise in portrait design and his meticulous attention to detail made him an invaluable asset to the Mint. He developed innovative techniques for transferring designs to steel dies and became known for his exhaustive preparatory work, creating numerous sketches and models before finalizing any design.
All 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins listed here are graded Mint State 65. Despite their age, they maintain an attractive mint luster, displaying only minor, widely scattered contact marks, along with occasional larger abrasions and small patches of hairlines.
The obverse of the 1902-O Morgan Dollar Coin highlights George T. Morgan’s classic Liberty portrait. Liberty is shown in left-facing relief wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet with “Liberty” inscribed. Around the portrait are 13 stars representing the nation’s founding colonies.
The reverse of 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollars presents another Morgan design, that of the heraldic eagle. The bald eagle is displayed front-facing with its wings raised. In its talons, it grasps arrows symbolizing military readiness and an olive branch denoting peace. A wreath encircles the eagle’s lower half, with the national motto inscribed above.
