The US Mint’s $10 gold piece, known as the Liberty Head Eagle Coin, holds the distinction of being the longest-running design in the US Eagle series. Introduced by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, in 1838, this visual graced the $10, $5, and $2.50 Eagle denominations. Among these, the $10 Liberty Eagle had the longest production run, spanning from 1838 to 1907. Today, 1901 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins are available in certified condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In 1901, the United States Mint greatly increased the production of $10 Liberty Eagles. In 1900, the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints combined to issue just over 374,000 coins. In 1901, the Philadelphia Mint alone struck nearly five times that number. With the 72,041 coins struck at New Orleans and the more than 2.812 million coins struck at San Francisco, the 1901 date mark saw its overall mintage jump 12 fold.
All 1901 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins offered here come in Mint State 64 condition. Coins with this grade have average mint luster, scattered light contact marks, and the possibility for hairlines. Some of the contact marks may be present in the primary focal areas and the hairlines may present as either scattered individual markings or small patches.
On the obverse of 1901 Liberty Gold Eagles, Christian Gobrecht’s portrait of Lady Liberty is featured on the coin. Liberty’s head is set in left-profile relief and she is shown with a crown atop her head. The field includes a ring of 13 stars and bears a date mark at the bottom.
The reverse side of the 1901 $10 Liberty Eagle Coin comes with an image of the heraldic eagle. This design shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The eagle is also shown with the US national shield. As Type II specimens, these coins have the added banner over the eagle with the national motto.
