Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designed the Liberty Head Eagle Coin in 1838. This $10 gold piece would become the longest-running design in the US Eagle denomination’s history. Featured on $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations, the $10 Liberty Eagle had the most extended production period, lasting from 1838 to 1907. On the obverse of 1901 Liberty Gold Eagles, you will find Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 depiction of Lady Liberty. In this design, Liberty’s bust is featured in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head. A ring of 13 stars is also included, along with a date mark.
The reverse side of the 1901 $10 Liberty Eagle Coin comes with another design from Gobrecht. This is the heraldic eagle and it features a front-facing eagle with the US national shield. Also included are the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. As a Type II coin, these specimens feature a banner above the eagle with the national motto.
