The $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin was both the largest denomination in the US Eagle Gold Series of circulation coins and the largest gold coin denomination ever issued by the United States Mint. Although the Double Eagle was primarily used by Americans in international commerce, it was a well-known gold piece of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Right now, 1900 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles from the turn of the 20th century are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

Each 1900 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin listed here comes with a protective plastic flip and is available to purchase in About Uncirculated, or better, condition. Coins in this showcase most, or all, of the original mint luster from 1900 when the coins were struck. AU coins have light wear at most, in some cases only trace wear, on the highest relief points of the design strike.
The 1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle was struck by the Philadelphia Mint and the San Francisco Mint. Throughout the history of the series, Philadelphia Mint issues lacked a mint mark. San Francisco Mint issues have an “S” mint mark visible on the reverse near the tail features of the eagle. In 1900, the San Francisco Mint issued some 2.45 million coins compared to 1.874 million coins from the Philadelphia Mint.
The obverse of 1900 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins comes with James B. Longacre’s bust of Liberty. Known as the Liberty Coronet design, it was a near-identical image of Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Coronet that was already in use on the $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations of the US Eagle in 1850 when the Double Eagle was released. Longacre made minor adjustments to the Liberty Coronet for the Double Eagle’s release.
On the reverse of 1900 $20 Liberty Double Eagles is the image of the heraldic eagle. This version of the national seal is based on the Great Seal of the United States and was uniquely featured on the Double Eagle only in the US Eagle Series. The major difference is the inclusion of a ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head and the rays of sunshine extending from one wingtip to the other on the outstretched bald eagle. These 1900 coins have the added inscription of the national motto within the ring of stars.
