James B. Longacre’s inspiration for his Liberty Head design on the $20 Double Eagle drew from neoclassical artistic traditions and existing coinage motifs. The design reflected the prevailing neoclassical aesthetic of mid-19th-century America, which looked to ancient Greece and Rome for artistic inspiration. Longacre’s Liberty Head was dignified and restrained, embodying republican virtues and the ideals of freedom that defined the young nation.
All 1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available here are in slabs and graded Mint State 64. MS64 coins have attractive eye appeal with average mint luster, light, scattered marks, and a few scattered hairlines.
The 1900 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features familiar obverse elements. Liberty appears in left-profile relief with flowing hair gathered into a bun, topped by a coronet crown. Thirteen stars arc around the field, and the date is positioned below.
The reverse of the 1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle carries the Great Seal of the United States. A front-facing heraldic eagle stands with wings extended, supporting the US shield and grasping both arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
