Starting in 1894, the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint were the only branches striking Liberty Double Eagles. Volumes produced at each mint exceeded a combined 2 million coins annually. The San Francisco Mint was generally responsible for producing the coins. In 1899, Philadelphia struck 1.669 million coins while San Francisco struck 2.010 million coins.

This term refers to the fact that many AU coins have visuals very close to Uncirculated coins, with the numeric grade range for AU coins falling between 50 and 58. On the obverse of 1899-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins is a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty with a coronet crown on her head and a ring of 13 stars around the bust to honor the original colonies. The year of issue is engraved below.
The reverse of the 1899-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features the Type III design visuals. Long-running designs on this side include the front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. There is a ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head. The Type III reverse, introduced in 1877, altered the face value engraving from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
