Throughout the course of the Morgan Silver Dollar’s history, the Philadelphia Mint was the leading branch in terms of production volume. While Philadelphia wasn’t necessarily the leading producer each year, throughout the history of the program it was the most consistent and has the highest annual average for production. Today, 1898 Morgan Silver Dollars in certified condition are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
During the 1898 release cycle, the United States Mint issued Morgan Dollars at three different branches. The Philadelphia Mint issued the highest volume of circulation coins, as well as a few hundred proof specimens. The New Orleans and San Francisco Mints each issued just over 4 million coins for circulation in 1898 as well.
All of these 1898 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade have slightly impaired mint luster. Coins at this level have numerous small contact marks, a few heavier marks scattered throughout the field, and the potential for small hairlines.
On the obverse of 1898 Morgan Dollars, you will find a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown on her head. The design, along with the reverse, was created by George T. Morgan.
The reverse side of the 1898 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. Morgan’s version of the national seal lacks a US national shield, but does feature a depiction of the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
