The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced by the United States Mint in 1878. The Morgan Dollar’s debut marked a return for silver dollar coining in the United States after a five-year hiatus. The Morgan Silver Dollar would go on to be one of the longest-running designs and the penultimate design for US silver dollars. Right now, 1896 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1896 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here is in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade exhibit a rather attractive eye appeal for the age, with slightly impaired mint luster. The coin may feature numerous small contact marks, a few scattered heavy marks, and small hairlines that are visible without magnification. Each coin arrives in a plastic slab.
In 1896, the United States Mint issued nearly 20 million Morgan Silver Dollars into circulation in the US. The coins were relatively evenly split across the New Orleans and San Francisco Mint locations, with the Philadelphia Mint issuing nearly half of the 20 million coins. Philadelphia produced 9.976 million coins, with New Orleans and San Francisco combining to produce nearly the same amount a 9.9 million coins.
For the obverse design of 1896 Morgan Dollar Coins, the mint features George T. Morgan’s bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief follows classical art works with its visuals, showcasing Liberty with a coronet crown and a Phrygian cap on her head. The field includes 13 stars along the bottom half of the design element.
In the reverse design of 1896 Morgan Silver Dollars, another of Morgan’s designs for the coin is featured. Here, his unique version of the heraldic eagle features a bald eagle in front-facing relief clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace with a wreath enclosing most of the bird’s figure.
