The Morgan Silver Dollar was one of the longest-running silver dollar designs in American history. Introduced in 1878 by the United States Mint, the Morgan Silver Dollar was designed by US Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Production of the 1894 Morgan Silver Dollar was impacted, in part, by the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893. The act had established a mandate for silver purchases by the government to support the production of Morgan Silver Dollars. Philadelphia Mint production plummeted to just 110,000 coins, though production volume at New Orleans and San Francisco remained high at 1.7 million and 1.2 million coins, respectively.
The obverse of the 1894 Morgan Dollar Coin comes with a depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan and depicts Liberty with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown on her head. This side of the coin also features 13 stars.
On the reverse of 1894 Morgan Silver Dollars, you will find Morgan’s heraldic eagle design. This simplified version of the heraldic eagle depicts the American bald eagle without the US national shield as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
