The historic coins of the US Eagle denomination are unquestionably the most popular historic American gold coins for sale. Produced by the United States Mint from 1795 to 1933, remaining specimens are highly coveted because vast numbers of the coins were melted down by the federal government after 1933. The San Francisco Mint issued the greatest volume of 1893 Liberty Double Eagles. Its mintage of 996,175 coins in 1893 was nearly triple that of the Philadelphia Mint and was far greater than the 18,402 coins issued by the Carson City Mint.
