The $10 Eagle Gold Coin from the United States Mint stands the test of time as one of the nation’s most iconic forms of currency. The 1893 issue of $10 Liberty Eagles included strikes by the Philadelphia Mint, the New Orleans Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the Carson City Mint. This was the final date mark in the series to feature four branch mints striking the coins as Carson City would close following the 1893 release cycle. Philadelphia issued the largest number of coins at more than 1.8 million, while Carson City issued the fewest at 14,000 coins.
In the obverse design of 1893 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins, the mint features Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 image of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust depicts Liberty with a coronet crown on her head and a ring of 13 stars around the field. The date mark is engraved beneath the portrait of Liberty.
For the reverse side of the 1893 $10 Liberty Eagle, you will find the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design shows a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, as well as the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. As a Type II specimen, these coins also include a banner above the eagle with the national motto. This feature was added in 1866.
