The Morgan Silver Dollar remains one of the most enduring and celebrated silver dollar designs in United States history. First issued in 1878, the coin was created by US Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. Its introduction marked the return of silver dollar production after a five-year pause in coining by the US Mint. Today, 1893 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Morgan Silver Dollar production in 1893 was significantly disrupted by economic and political turmoil. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act was repealed in November 1893 during the Panic of 1893, one of the worst economic depressions in American history. This resulted in modest mintages across facilities, with approximately 378,000 struck in Philadelphia, 300,000 in New Orleans, and 100,000 in San Francisco. The Carson City 1893-CC issue would become the final Morgan Dollar ever produced at that historic Nevada mint, and was also the highest among the branches at 677,000 coins.
All 1893 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available here come in MS62 condition. Coins with this grade have impaired or dull mint luster with clusters of small marks present throughout the field. A few of these marks or nicks will appear in the primary focal areas, but the overall eye appeal of the coin is acceptable.
The obverse of the 1893 Morgan Dollar Coins showcases George T. Morgan’s depiction of Lady Liberty. In this left-facing portrait, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap symbolizing freedom, along with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown resting upon her head. Surrounding her image are 13 stars representing the original colonies.
On the reverse side of the 1893 Morgan Silver Dollar, Morgan’s heraldic eagle design is featured. This simplified version of the classic American emblem presents a bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, notably without the US national shield.
