Coin Highlights:
This 1891-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is an MS64 specimen. The typical MS64 coin exhibits average luster with light, scattered marks and a few scattered hairlines. This particular vintage Morgan Dollar offers sharp, fully struck designs with crisp detail on Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers.
Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint are recognized as some of the most collectible coins in the entire Morgan series. The Carson City facility produced Morgan Dollars initially between 1878 and 1885 before it ceased operations in November 1885. Coin production resumed there in 1889, continuing through 1893, when the mint was permanently closed. During this second run, Carson City issued Morgan Dollars in greater quantities than before.
The obverse design of the 1891-CC Morgan Dollar Coin displays George T. Morgan’s depiction of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, symbolic of freedom, along with a coronet inscribed with “Liberty” and a laurel wreath around her hair. Surrounding her image are 13 stars representing the original colonies, along with the year of issue, 1890.
The reverse of the 1891-CC Morgan Silver Dollar also showcases the artistry of George T. Morgan. In this rendition, a bald eagle is featured with wings spread wide and facing forward. Unlike later designs, this version does not include the U.S. national shield. The eagle grasps arrows in one talon, signifying preparedness for conflict, and an olive branch in the other, representing peace. The iconic “CC” mint mark of the Carson City Mint is located beneath the eagle’s tail feathers.
