Lady Liberty appears in portrait on the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins. An iconic effigy, this rendition shows Ms. Liberty looking left while wearing a Phrygian cap. Her head is also adorned with a crown of wheat and a band with a “Liberty” inscription.
A bald eagle soars on the reverse of 1890 Morgan Silver Dollars. As you admire this elegant rendition, you’ll notice arrows and an olive branch in the bird’s talons. Traditionally, these have symbolized war and peace when featured on American coins.
George T. Morgan was born in Birmingham, England in 1845. During his early years in Britain, Morgan worked as a die engraver. Then in 1876 he moved to the U.S., where he was hired as an assistant engraver under William Barber at the United States Mint. Morgan quickly demonstrated his prowess by researching and developing designs for the new Silver Dollar that was to enter circulation following the 1878 Bland-Allison Act. In 1917, Morgan was promoted to Chief Engraver, a position he held until his death in 1925.
