In 1890, the US Mint struck only 58,040 Liberty Gold Half Eagles in total. Philadelphia and Carson City branch mints issued the coins, with Carson City striking 53,800 coins compared to the 4,240 issued by Philadelphia. As the decade wore on, mintage increased annually and the number of mints issue the coins grew to include the New Orleans Mint and San Francisco Mint by 1892.

Known as About Uncirculated, the AU50 grade is the lowest among AU coins and indicates coins with extremely light signs of friction on the highest relief points, as well as medium or near-full mint luster.
On the obverse of 1890 $5 Liberty Half Eagles is a bust of Lady Liberty. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the portrait shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars around her head.
The reverse side of 1890 Liberty Gold Half Eagles comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. The American bald eagle is in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The banner above its head bears the national motto.
