For the obverse of 1889 Morgan Silver Dollars Lady Liberty appears in portrait. Designed by George T. Morgan, Ms. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief with wavy hair and a crown of wheat. She also wears a band inscribed with the word “Liberty” along with Phrygian cap. Obverse inscriptions read “E Pluribus Unum, 1889.”
For the reverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar Coin a bald eagle is featured with its head turned to the left. As its wings spread wide, the bird carries arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Traditionally, these have symbolized war and peace. There are also inscriptions on the reverse reading “United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.”
In 1873, the Coinage Act brought production of the Seated Liberty Dollar to a halt. For over three decades, this had been the standard Silver Dollar produced by the United States. Then in 1878, the Bland-Allison Act was passed, which decreed that the Treasury purchase silver for the production of a new Dollar coin. A fresh design was in order, and ultimately U.S. Mint director Henry Linderman settled on the artwork by assistant engraver George T. Morgan. And thus, a classic of American coinage was born.
